Guardia and the Story of the Lost Luggage..

I was sitting on my terraza watching the sunset on my last day in Guardia and reflecting on a week that went by way too fast.  Wishing I could bottle some of this up and take it home with me..

City View to the Right

It had been a week since I’d left Dallas in a frantic rush of trying to meet last minute requests from work, packing, and shopping for things I thought I needed for Italy.  Arriving at the airport almost 3 hours early, I thought I had assured myself a relaxing start to my trip, only to have my main piece of luggage lost by the airline as they were checking me in ( I did not even know this was possible!) but they forgot to tag it before they sent it down the chute.  Despite a huge effort by several people to retrieve the bag and get it tagged and on the plane on time (thanks Linda!) , I was not surprised when I arrived 14 hours later in Rome to find that my bag did not arrive.  While reporting my missing bag in Rome, I managed to misplace my passport as well!  (a full blown travel disaster!)

Even though I was exhausted from the travel and day’s events, after getting picked up at the airport by friends and we started talking about all of the fun things planned for the week, it was hard to think about lost luggage or passports. ..and so began another magical week in Guardia Sanframondi

My first stop was to see the Orso family at the Tanna Dell Orso, where I was received with a lovely bouquet of flowers and a glass of wine (heaven!)

Me with my good friend Ana Orso

Then was whisked away to see my house which had been fully set up for me: the bed was made, towels, shower curtains, champagne and water!!,( and I had been worried about how I was going to manage with my lost luggage!!)  What more could a girl need!

It really touches my heart when I think about all the small details that went into making me feel at home when I first walked in the door. Simply amazing!!  In addition, our project manager (and by now also a close family friend) Pasquale Orso, did a fantastic job with the renovation projects and I could not have been more pleased!

Notice that the bag that arrived had the margaritas!!

Later that night Laurie and Francisco arrived in town (from Los Angeles). They also have purchased a home in Guardia and were signing the final closing documents for their house that week. Also arriving from Miami were Mariluz and her lovely daughter Sofia who will hopefully be neighbors with us in Guardia soon!!

We all met at the Meridiana for dinner and wine.  Everyone was so excited to be back in Guardia!, and it was such a treat to be there together!!.  We closed the restaurant down late that night .. 36 hours of no sleep, no luggage and no passport, still a perfect day!

I had the most peaceful night’s sleep in my house.. I thought it might feel strange, in a new place all by myself, but the house was like the town itself..warm and cozy and I went to bed with visions of Italy dancing in my head.

My first breakfast in my new place.. it was fantastico!

The next morning, a little miracle, I called the information number at the Rome airport they had given me to find the luggage.  They had found my passport and my lost luggage!! I was shocked!  Since Rome is 2 hours away from Guardia, they told me they would bring both items to me in 48 hours.  I was ecstatic!!   Mostly for the passport because I had resigned myself that I would likely lose the luggage, but did not want to spend the rest of my week trying to get another passport.

Piazza in Cerreto ..

The next few days went by with a blur, of shopping and eating.. mostly eating!  My birthday was on Sunday, and it seems like it turned into a 3 day birthday celebration!! , but a BIG PARTY was planned for Tuesday night, since Wednesday was a holiday.  Meanwhile, Monday I excitedly awaited the arrival of my suitcase and passport, and as promised they arrived with my passport and a suitcase that evening.. except they brought the wrong suitcase, (wuawuawuah!) and so continued the adventure of my lost luggage.

The luggage finally arrived and was delivered to the Tanna Dell Orso on Tuesday evening, but by then, I had already made due without most of the contents and had lost interest in these THINGS that I felt the need to drag across the world with me.

The Party on Tuesday was a spectacular event!! .  An  outdoor paradise, fantastic live music, dancing, incredible food and 75 liters of wine!  Pasquale and Roberto, hats off to you, you hosted the most amazingly fun evening that I think people will be talking about for years to come!!

Over a dozen musicians came to the party from as far away as Naples.. the soundtrack to the evening was a wonderful combination of American and Italian classics.  How they managed to get all these musicians that have never practiced together sound so wonderful, was incredible!

At the end of the party, I was surprised by the most AMAZING birthday cake I have ever had!!  Thank you Thank you Benny & Doriana!!  The top of the cake is the American flag and the sides are the Italian flag.  I cannot imagine how long it took to make this masterpiece!

And just like that, the week was over and I am reflecting on this lost bag.. In the end, I am glad that I lost it.  I finally hauled it back to my house and unpacked its contents on the eve of my departure. (ironic!)   Losing  this suitcase made me appreciate the THINGS that are really important to me, which are my family and friends,(old and new), and that letting go and just letting THINGS just naturally happen as they do in Italy “piano piano” is where the magic happens..

Ciao Italia.. alla prossima!

Home Improvements on the Italian Casa Continue..

I leave for Italy tomorrow morning and should be packing, but I just received the the latest pictures of the home that is waiting for me on the other side of the ocean..

I am completely blown away by how our house has been transformed into a home before my very eyes!
The Entry Way and Front Door to the House

It is very emotional for me to see how the entire Orso family (and in particular, my project manager Pasquale) have taken care of so many little details of my home to create a warm inviting place that I am dying to see!!!  I don't think I will be able to sleep tonight!
Bathroom accessorized

I am also excited to see all the new friends I have met during this wonderful adventure!!.  The Orso family (of course!) , some are friendships that were made in guardia, some are friends that have recently moved to guardia and are living there now, and lastly Laurie and Francisco that live in Los Angeles, but are going to close on their house at the end of April.

A huge party is already in the works !! I hear there will  be live music ( a dozen local musicians) and of course lots of wine!!

I feel strange listing prices.. but I want to let people know how affordable and easy it is to renovate a house in Guardia.. there are houses in all shapes, sizes and budgets:

House - $30,000
Furniture - $1200
Fridge - $400

Water Heater - $400
Electric work - $200

Going Back to Guardia to Set Up Our House !!!

Photo courtesy of Roberto Amado - Guardia Sanframondi taken March 23, 2013

Guardia Sanframondi continues to grow as a few more expats have purchase homes in Guardia.. So far, Texas, California and New York are being represented!!  It is becoming somewhat of a tight knit group with everyone keeping in touch and comparing notes. All of the people that have bought houses are very different and have purchased a house in Guardia for different reasons. The one thing we all have in common is the overwhelming feeling of being embraced by the honest & incredibly helpful people of Guardia that have made this such an amazing journey!!

It seems like there is always something new and fascinating to discover about Guardia!!.. for any of you interested .. check into facebook friending:  Guardia S.Normanno .  Normanno daily posts pictures of the historical town and conducts open forums on historical sights and fun facts about Guardia.  ..

I am going back to Guardia Sanframondi at the end of April to finishing furnishing the house and getting it ready as a family vacation - 2nd home that me and my family and friends will enjoy for many years to come.

I am trying to figure out the best way to bring a little piece of Texas back for my visit in April.. Everyone in Guardia seems to enjoy the cultural experience of trying new foods and seeing a little piece of america.  Last time I went I took Chips, Salsa and Margarita Mix ( + tequila) which everyone seemed to enjoy!  I am open to suggestions if anyone has any great ideas .. remember I have to be able to put it in my suitcase...

The older gentleman,  Archangelo that I bought the house from in December, finally moved out of the house and handed over the keys to my project manager last month.  (Archangelo had moved out of the house for a while, but I think had a hard time parting with the keys to his home he had lived in his entire life) .  In the end, he was happy how everything turned out, and I hope he will be happy with some of the work that has already been started.

I can hardly stand the excitement to see all the progress that is being done on our little house!!

With minor renovations started just a few weeks ago, I am already seeing a tranformation taking place via pictures that I receive almost daily to keep me up to date with the latest improvements..

Showerhead!!!!

Armando - Extraordinary Painter and Replaster Specialist - at our Front Door

You would think that having work done on  a house overseas would be very difficult, given the language barriers (remember, I don't speak italian, and in guardia very few people speak english) nevermind not being able to oversee the work myself, but it has been a very stress free and easy project so far, thanks to my project manager who has spent so much time getting bids, sending me pictures and providing all of the detail to make sure I'm happy with all the work.

So far we've been able to do the following done :
- Purchase a bedroom set and nightstands (so I have a place to sleep when I get there)
- Purchase a refrigerator (included delivery and intallation)
- Paint and  repair any plaster in the entire house
- Install a water heater that was from this century (the old one requred wood pellets??)
- Install a showerhead in the bathroom
-Get the internet installed

Painted Stairway

The prices have been generally less expensive than it would cost to do similar work in the US.

I'll have a full update once I get back with more pictures, and hopefully another happy chapter of the adventures of home buying in Guardia Sanframondi.

My New bedroom set in the boxes

I have some great before and after pictures .. but I am having some technical difficulties getting the pictures loaded!  I can't wait to get it fully furnished and decorated !!!
To be continued, Ciao!!

Setting up a House in Guardia Sanframondi

There have been quite a few things going on in Guardia since I closed on my house.. all good!!

Our friends Melanie and Thomas have moved into their new home and are having a great time exploring and becoming part of the new community.  (I'm a bit jealous!!).

Several other homes have sold to other Americans as the word gets out and people start arriving and falling in love with this special town. (plenty of houses for less than $40,000!)  Here is a link to the blog of my new friend and neighbor Laurie Agard, who purchased a house in Guardia recently.  It is so fantastic to see someone else's  story and see that is was just as magical for them!

http://guardia-sanframondi-italy.blogspot.com/2013/01/guardia-sanframondi-conquers-united.html

My hero on the other side of the world (Pasquale Orso) is working on getting all of my utilities tranfered over for me, and having some issues convincing the electric company that Texas is not part of Mexico, as well as other difficulties, all part of the fun!.  I am looking forward to making a trip to Italy in the spring to get our home fully furnished and taking the entire family for a trip this summer.

The amazing part of the journey for me and Laurie, is that there is always somebody on the other end to help us out and make everything work. I feel overwhelmed and by the good fortune and generosity that has been given to me.

I hope if any of you are looking for a place like this.. you will take a trip to Guardia Sanframondi Italy and look for Pasquale at The Tanna Del Orso  at  http://www.bborso.com/guardia.html .

Until next time, Ciao!
